All kinds of fields, including sports and sales, are commonly the sites of competitions. The results of competition can either be positive or negative, but how does a competition make you feel? When you’re comparing yourself to others, how do you react? Does it motivate or discourage you? It’s important to have a healthy and objective view of competition to avoid its negative outcomes. So, let’s take a look at the positive and negative outcomes of competition.
Positive Side of Competition-
- Encourage to do Better- Working hard and improving skills are not always easy. Luckily, we can encourage an individual to do these things. In this case, competition is a great option. Competition can be a major motivator, as it can inspire an individual to do their very best. In addition to motivation, it also can provide a person with a peer group. This is valuable because it allows the person to see how they stack up against others in their field. From there, a person can get a reality check and they can begin to see exactly where they need to make improvements. So, competition can help in the growth and improvement of an individual.
- Innovation- Competition can push you to do something that puts you one step ahead of the competition. Innovative things can be identified in a competitive environment, where everyone is striving to do their best. And a single innovation done by one person can change the entire outlook of the world.
- Face Failure- Facing failure can be difficult, but the lessons learned are important. Failure can provide experience in overcoming and adapting to competition. When a person has experienced failure, they are better equipped to deal with competition, as they have already learned how to adapt.
- Motivation- Competition provides motivation to do better. If you are running alone in a race, would you even be running, and if you were, would you give your full efforts? Those are the reasons why competition is so important.
- Real World Challenges- If you look around yourself, you’ll notice that you’re in competition with people everywhere. There’s competition everywhere, and it’s a constant fact of life that everyone encounters at some point or another.
Negative side of competition –
- Stress- If you examine the negative aspects of competition, you might find that it can lead to stress. This stress can contribute to mental health issues like depression and anxiety, and it is a contributing factor in high suicide rates. Competition is also a factor in stress levels for students taking competitive exams. Stress can also increase as people get older.
- Encourage Unethical Behaviour- In today’s society where everything is a competition, it is easy to get caught up and do whatever it takes to win. This competitive environment can force people to choose the wrong path to achieve fame, money, or power. It is important to remember that the goal is to be happy and to have a healthy and productive life. Don’t let winning the competition become your priority.
- Individuality- People start having an individual life as they don’t feel safe to share anything with the people around them. They are afraid that with the knowledge they have, another person can go far ahead of them if they did so, and this is a very wrong and absurd mindset.
- Self-Doubt- Competition causes self-doubt as everyone has a different set of positions and responsibilities, and when comparison is made, people start questioning themselves, asking, “Am I even worth it?”, “Am I doing my best?”, or, “Why can’t I?” These sorts of questions can cause great self-doubt.
I have noticed that there are positive and negative effects of competition. The question I ask is, is it actually important to compete? This is really subjective; some people know how to approach competition and put it to good use, while others misuse it and get on the wrong track. So, it’s important to do competition in a healthy way.
Share your knowledge with others, but do not be envious or jealous of other people. Focus on your own personal growth. Set goals that are achievable within your own sphere of influence, and then set out to meet those goals. Work hard to reach your goals, and remember to do so with joy. Focus on the subjects you love, the things you enjoy doing, and do not try to chase after whatever fields or subjects are viewed as the most competitive at the moment.
The sharing of knowledge will not place you at a disadvantage to others. The more one shares about their area of interest, the greater the number of connections they will establish. These connections will be formed due to one’s mindset and knowledge. Instead, one should consistently strive to contribute to the topics with which they are familiar.
